R50 Suspsnsion upgrade - camber issues

Postby gopies on Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:47 am

Hello all,

I recently had the pathy (R50 2001) upgraded to Bilstein struts/shocks and king springs to give me that little extra lift and take the load on the rear when heading off on those fishing trips of mine. What I found interesting was, after a full lock U-turn the 2 front wheels where cambered in at the bottom ( I could see daylight on the inside of the tyres ). Enough that my mate and I said some colourful words and became concerned. When I backed it up to take a photo the wheels straightened up. So watching my mate do another full lock U-turn the amount of camber I think is excessive. The guys who did the job claims its normal.
Anyway I took it to my local Bauerepairs and had it checked. The test results shows the camber is +0.44 ,told it should be -0.10 (this is normal not the excessive amount after a U-turn). I am being told by different people that:
-I need a camber kit
-I don't need a camber kit
-I need a shim kit
-I'm just paranoid

So I am wondering if anyone who has gone through a similar upgrade and weather a camber / shim kit was fitted.

BTW - I went up to the Barmah forest last weekend with the tinnie and all the camping gear, the car sat level for the first time and drove beautifly.

Cheers,
Matt

Matt

my 2004 Pathy also looks a bit camberish with 40mm lifted Pedders springs. When I turn a wide corner on bitumen, the outside tyre squeals. I think you just need to keep the front end alignment good by having it checked every service or 10000km. Might sound a bit often but saves expensive tyres.

Take it to Pro-Axle or Pedders if you have one nearby and have Camber Bolts/Pins fitted it's the only way to correct camber

Most wheel alignment places will just any BS under sun.

All,

Thanks for the advice. I ended up taking it to Pedders and had a camber kit fitted. When they checked it all out I had a call from them saying that I also needed different bushes to get the adjustments right. Also after driving around for a few weeks without the kit the Cooper ATs started to look a little worse for wear (they weren’t far from replacement anyway). So I had a set of Goodrich TA/KOs fitted the day before Pedders got hold of it.

Right now I can't be any happier with the way she's cruising and taking to the bush (with a load). When I originally floated the plan to the wife the quote was around $1800 for an OME kit. Now its all done I have very little change from $4k (but she's not very happy).I reckon' its money well spent.

Cheers,
Matt
